Newcastle United finds itself at a crossroads regarding the future of striker Callum Wilson following yet another injury setback.
Wilson, the stalwart No. 9, sustained a pectoral injury during the recent 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest, marking his first start since December 23rd’s defeat against Luton Town.
Since his £20 million move from AFC Bournemouth in 2020, Wilson has impressively netted 45 goals in 90 Premier League appearances for Newcastle. However, his impact is marred by his frequent spells on the sidelines, with injuries causing him to miss over a season’s worth of matches in his three and a half seasons at the club. Moreover, he has started less than 50% of the games in which he’s been available.
As Wilson’s availability for the upcoming match against AFC Bournemouth remains uncertain, the striker is hopeful to face his former club for the first time in the Premier League.
Despite agreeing to a contract extension until the end of the 2024-25 season earlier this campaign, Wilson’s future at St James’ Park remains uncertain. During the winter transfer window, speculation swirled linking him to top clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea, with potential moves valued at £18 million. However, head coach Eddie Howe dismissed these rumors, emphasizing the importance of retaining Wilson, especially with Alexander Isak sidelined due to injury.
Nevertheless, Newcastle faces pressure to capitalize on Wilson’s market value this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer amid financial constraints. Talks regarding a new deal with Joelinton, whose contract also expires in less than 18 months, are ongoing. However, discussions regarding a contract extension for Wilson have yet to materialize.
As a result, Newcastle could make Wilson available for transfer this summer, with interest reportedly brewing from clubs such as Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, and the Saudi Pro League. This decision underscores the club’s need to balance its squad and financial considerations amidst a challenging period.
