Michael Edwards’ Post-Match Actions at Old Trafford Following Liverpool’s Loss to Man Utd

After returning to Anfield last week to assume the role of FSG’s CEO of football, Michael Edwards made his first public appearance at Old Trafford, witnessing Liverpool’s disappointing FA Cup defeat against Manchester United.

The former sporting director of the Reds, instrumental in the club’s successful period under Jurgen Klopp, left his post in the summer of 2022. However, his expertise in player recruitment, evident in signings like Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah, and Alisson Becker, prompted his return to duties by owners Fenway Sports Group. Edwards, now appointed as CEO of football, will not only oversee Liverpool matters but also contribute to FSG’s global football investments.

With Liverpool preparing for life after Klopp at the end of the season, the defeat against United marked the end of their quadruple ambitions. Despite a valiant effort in the FA Cup quarter-finals, Liverpool succumbed to a dramatic 4-3 loss, a match etched in history but one that left Liverpool fans disheartened.

Although officially assuming his role on June 1st, Edwards was present at Old Trafford, seated alongside Anfield legends Sir Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush. Reports suggest he engaged with Sir Dave Brailsford, chief sporting adviser to Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the recent stakeholder in United, during the game. At full-time, Edwards was described as displaying a resigned smile, indicating disbelief at Liverpool’s defeat.

However, the loss against United wouldn’t have surprised Edwards. Aware of Liverpool’s grueling fixture schedule, compounded by injuries to key players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Ibrahima Konate, Diogo Jota, and Curtis Jones, he understands the challenges faced by the team amidst a congested season.
