Man City Star Snubbed for Premier League Medal May Never Play for Club Again

Lucas Paqueta

Manchester City are preparing for a summer overhaul, which may see several players leaving the club. One notable incident involved Lucas Paqueta of West Ham, who was seen shaking hands with City’s Pep Guardiola and his assistant Juanma Lillo before a match in September. This unusual greeting took place on City’s bench, as the Blues had considered signing Paqueta during the summer transfer window.

However, a potential betting breach investigation by the FA halted the move, prompting City to sign Matheus Nunes instead. Nunes has yet to make a significant impact, and Mateo Kovacic also took time to settle in. With Kevin De Bruyne injured for much of the season and ongoing speculation about Bernardo Silva’s future, City may look for an attacking midfielder again this term.

Guardiola has not publicly acknowledged City’s interest in Paqueta, who has eight goals and seven assists in 42 appearances this season. Despite a subdued performance in Sunday’s match, Paqueta remains a potential target for City, especially given his reported £85 million release clause.

Meanwhile, Kalvin Phillips is almost certain to leave City. After a challenging 18-month stint, Phillips moved on loan to West Ham in January, only for injury to prematurely end his season. His chances of making England’s Euro 2024 squad are slim, as he has only made four Premier League appearances for City this term, making him ineligible for a medal. Phillips’ future remains uncertain, and he is unlikely to be part of City’s plans next season.
