Manchester United Plot Sensational Move for European Star, Poised to Derail Rivals’ Plans

Giorgi Mamardashvili

Manchester United are far from finished with their summer transfer business, even after securing four new signings and starting their Premier League campaign with a victory. One of the recent arrivals, Joshua Zirkzee, made an immediate impact by scoring on his debut against Fulham, helping the Red Devils secure all three points. However, manager Erik ten Hag is not yet satisfied with his squad and is reportedly eyeing another high-profile addition.

According to The Mirror, Manchester United are preparing a move for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, a potential signing that could disrupt the plans of one of their closest rivals, Liverpool. Ten Hag is keen to strengthen his squad further, and the 23-year-old Georgian shot-stopper has emerged as a prime target.

The report suggests that the potential transfer hinges on the sale of current first-team players. Jadon Sancho is seen as a key figure in making the move possible, although other players like Scott McTominay, Victor Lindelof, or even Antony could be sold to fund Mamardashvili’s arrival at Old Trafford. This situation mirrors United’s recent acquisition of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, which was facilitated by the sale of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

If Manchester United succeed in signing Mamardashvili, it would not only be a significant coup due to his impressive abilities but also because it would thwart Liverpool’s efforts to bring the goalkeeper to Anfield. Reports have indicated that new Liverpool manager Arne Slot had identified Mamardashvili as a priority signing, with plans to loan him to Bournemouth for Premier League experience while Alisson retains the No.1 spot.

However, Manchester United’s interest could derail Liverpool’s strategy, with Mamardashvili reportedly very open to a move to Old Trafford. The Georgian goalkeeper had an outstanding Euro 2024 campaign, making 20 saves in the group stage—more than any other keeper in the tournament—highlighting his readiness for a major European move.

Valencia are demanding £34 million for Mamardashvili, but Liverpool have offered £30 million plus add-ons, hoping that will suffice to secure his services. If Liverpool hesitate, Manchester United are poised to capitalize on the situation.

Where Mamardashvili would fit in at United is uncertain, as Andre Onana is currently the club’s first-choice goalkeeper under ten Hag. While it’s unlikely that this hierarchy will change in the immediate future, United’s pursuit of Mamardashvili signals their intent to plan for the long term and strengthen their squad with top-quality talent. If a deal doesn’t materialize this summer, it could be revisited next year when circumstances may be more favorable.
